GRADE 9 MATH DESTREAMING – FALL 2021

In the summer of 2020, the Ministry of Education announced a new Grade 9 math course which will be the compulsory Grade 9 math course in all Ontario schools effective September 2021. This new curriculum will be a continuation of the grade 8 curriculum.  Grade 9 academic, applied and pre-AP math are no longer offered.

Mathematics, Grade 9 (MTH1W)

Course Description:

This course enables students to consolidate, and continue to develop, an understanding of mathematical concepts related to number sense and operations, algebra, measurement, geometry, data, probability, and financial literacy. Students will use mathematical processes, mathematical modelling, and coding to make sense of the mathematics they are learning and to apply their understanding to culturally responsive and relevant real-world situations. Students will continue to enhance their mathematical reasoning skills, including proportional reasoning, spatial reasoning, and algebraic reasoning, as they solve problems and communicate their thinking. Prerequisite: None

The Mathematics Department at LHSS offers courses at all levels of the curriculum: essential and destreamed math in grade 9, essential, applied and academic courses in grades 10, and workplace, college and university courses in grades 11 and 12. No matter whether your destination is the workplace, college or university – we have a pathway for you to obtain your three compulsory mathematics credits. Most of our students take at least four credits in mathematics.

Extra help is available to students if they encounter difficulties with the curriculum. For those students who need to be stretched, we offer the full spectrum of mathematics and computer competitions that are available to us from the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing at the University of Waterloo. Your Math teacher will be able to provide you with more information. Be sure to listen to announcements and watch this page for information on upcoming math contests.
