GRADE 9

PPL1OX (Healthy Active Living, Open – Female)
PPL1OY (Healthy Active Living, Open – Male)

This course emphasizes regular participation in a variety of physical activities that promote lifelong healthy active living. Students will be introduced to a range of sports and activities with an emphasis on understanding and applying the skills and strategies required to confidently participate. Sports and activities covered may include badminton, basketball, field hockey, fitness training, floorball/floor hockey, football, rock climbing, rugby, soccer, ultimate frisbee, volleyball, wrestling, and a variety of others.

Healthy living topics will help students develop the skills to critically examine and make healthy choices that will enable them to lead healthy lifestyles. Topics include substance use and related behaviours, healthy relationships, human development, personal safety, and nutrition. Emphasis will be placed on developing critical thinking, communication, and social skills.

 

PPL1OI (Train and Play, Open – Mixed)

The perfect blend of fitness and sport, this course emphasizes the link between movement and play through a variety of fitness activities and traditional sport games. This mix of our fitness-focused courses with our traditional sport-based program delivery is ideal for those who love all forms of movement and are looking to both train their personal fitness and learn more about athletic skills and strategies through game settings.

Health topics will include: personal safety & decision making skills, substance use & abuse, nutrition, and healthy growth & sexuality.

Phys-Ed Courses are highly recommended for all grade 9 students (Health/Phys-ed is a required credit for graduation)

 


GRADE 10

PAF2OI (Mixed Open Fitness)

This strength & conditioning course will challenge students to improve their own personal fitness and provide a foundation of functional movement skills.  Students will participate in strength training, olympic lifting, gymnastics, metabolic conditioning, CrossFit and ROMWODs.  This course will introduce students to a periodized training program that includes both individual, partner and team workouts with an emphasis on community.  Students will learn the importance of living a healthy active lifestyle through proper nutrition, training principles, safety and movement competence.  This course is open to anyone who is interested in joining a fitness community! Prerequisite:  NONE.

 

PAF2OX (Total Fitness – formerly known as Live Fit, Open) – FEMALE ONLY

Total fitness considers all components of fitness through daily, vigorous participation in a wide variety of current popular fitness trends such as:

  • Strength Training: in the weight room as well as through group fitness classes and circuits using a variety of fitness tools (BOSU balls, medicine balls, resista-balls, TRX, etc.)
  • Cardiovascular training: spin classes, step classes, rowing, HIIT, dance fitness, etc.
  • Recovery Training: mobility training, yoga, meditation & mindfulness

Class instruction is primarily delivered through group fitness classes but also includes some self-directed workouts. Health topics include the examination of issues related to healthy sexuality, healthy eating, substance use and abuse; and the use of informed decision-making, conflict resolution, and social skills in making personal choices. Prerequisite: NONE.

 

PAF2OY (Strength & Conditioning – formerly known as Power Fit, Open)

Students will participate in a wide range of training activities to develop knowledge and skills related to movement competence and personal fitness that provide a foundation for active living. The emphasis is on developing safe techniques as they are introduced to some major compound and functional lifts. They will learn about a Vitality approach to healthy living – an initiative that promotes good eating habits, an active lifestyle and a positive self-image. This course is a great introduction to strength training! Prerequisite: NONE.

 

PPL2OX (Healthy Active Living, Open – Female)

PPL2OY (Healthy Active Living, Open – Male)

This course emphasizes regular participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that promote lifelong healthy active living. Student learning will include the application of movement principles to refine skills; participation in a variety of activities that enhance personal competence, fitness, and health; examination of issues related to healthy sexuality, healthy eating, substance use and abuse; and the use of informed decision-making, conflict resolution, and social skills in making personal choices.   Prerequisite:  NONE.

Popular activities include:

Ultimate frisbee, rugby, football, soccer, field hockey, basketball, badminton, volleyball, floor hockey, fitness training, games of low organization, Aussie Rules football, Tennis, Tchoukball, European handball and softball.

This course will build on the physical activity skills and application of lifelong healthy active living demonstrated in PPL 2OY.  Students will be introduced to a variety of new activities including; Aussie Rules Football, Cricket, Lacrosse, and Sepak Takraw. This course emphasizes regular participation in enjoyable physical activities to promote lifelong healthy active living. Students will learn movement skills and principles, ways to improve personal fitness and physical competence. They will investigate issues related to Healthy Growth and Sexuality, Personal Safety and Injury Prevention, and Mental Health.  Students will participate in activities designed to develop goal-setting, decision making, communication, conflict resolution and social skills.  Prerequisite:  NONE.

 

PPZ3CI (Health for Life – Yoga and Mindfulness, College – Co-ed) NOT OFFERED IN 2023-2024

In this course, we will use yoga and mindfulness to examine all aspects of well-being — physical, cognitive, emotional, spiritual, and social.  During a daily mind-body yoga practice, we will focus on the physical poses, controlled breathing, and relaxation.  We will also learn mindfulness techniques that promote resilience to rise above challenges and live life more fully.
Topics include:  The 8 Limbs of Yoga, The Importance of Self-care, Thinking Traps, Expressing Gratitude, and How to Support Mental Health.
Please note:  This is a non-gendered course that can be taken in addition to other Phys.Ed. credits. Comfortable attire is desirable; changeroom use is optional.  Students are encouraged to bring their own yoga mat and blanket.  Prerequisite:  NONE.

Students will participate in a wide range of training activities to develop knowledge and skills related to movement competence and personal fitness that provide a foundation for active living.  The emphasis is on the development of a personalized approach to fitness through the exploration and refinement of more advanced functional lifts and training principles.  They will learn about a Vitality approach to healthy living – an initiative that promotes good eating habits, an active lifestyle and a positive self image.  This course takes strength training to a new level of intensity and challenges participants to experience their true fitness potential!  Prerequisite:  NONE.

 

PLF4MI (Athletic Leadership, University/College – Co-ed)

Students in this class can expect to participate in and lead activities that promote the engaging opportunities, inclusive nature, and championship culture that define our Highlander Athletics Community. This course will develop Athletic Leadership theories and skills as students pursue important roles in our school, with our teams, and the surrounding community.  Students will explore topics like group dynamics, teamwork, goal setting, coaching theory, problem solving, and conflict resolution as they relate to competitive and recreational sporting environments. Athletic Leadership students help to drive the direction of multiple Sports Marketing, Sports Management, and brand management initiatives within Highlander Athletics. Prerequisite:  ENG3U, IDC3OX or senior level physical education credit.

Activities may include:

  • Running key Highlander Athletics events like Intramurals, Athletics Banquet, Game-Day Activities, and more!
  • Developing and leading FUN recreational opportunities on and off site!
  • Generating creative content, developing marketing plans, and executing social media campaigns to help create a buzz around the school!
  • Leading supportive athletic opportunities with local Seniors, students from our feeder schools in our ACE community!

 

PPL4OI (Healthy Active Living, Open – Co-ed)

This course focuses on the development of a personalized approach to healthy active living through participation in a variety of sports and recreational activities that have the potential to engage students’ interest throughout their lives. In addition, they will be given opportunities to refine their decision-making, conflict-resolution, and interpersonal skills, with a view to enhancing their mental health and their relationships with others. Prerequisite:  NONE

There will be some unique onsite activities that may include:

Fencing, Krav Maga, Judo, rock climbing, indoor & outdoor games & more
Note:  There will be an enhancement fee for some onsite activities

 

PSK4UI (Introductory Kinesiology, University)

Where science and sport collide, this course focuses on the study of human movement and of the systems, factors, and principles involved in improving human performance. Students will learn about the beneficial effects of physical activity on growth, development and health. A focus on the structure and function of major body systems involved in human movement will support a practical understanding of related anatomical and physiological concepts and theories. A sociological lens will be applied to the historical evolution of physical activity and sport, the emergence of sport as a big business, and ethical issues in sport – both past and present. Prerequisite: Any Grade 11 University or University/College preparation course in Science, or any Grade 11 or 12 open course in Health and Physical Education.
